In the Fall of 1977 Mr. Robert C. Thacker purchased Compton Lumber Store in Hindman, Kentucky from the proprietor, Mr. Ed Compton. This tiny, 3500 square feet lumber store, had only one small truck and one delivery person who also worked the lumber yard. With the help of his hardware distributor, Mr. Thacker decided to join the PRO Group in 1978 and renamed his store, Hindman PROMart.

As a young man, Robert’s son Voncel Thacker loved the lumber store. He saw many ways to expand the business with an emphasis on serving the local community. Working with his father’s guidance, Voncel Thacker took the reins of the store and oversaw the expansion of the facility to over 45,000 square feet. In 2014, this included the remodeling of counters and floors. In recognition of their efforts, Hindman PROMart was named the 2010 Paul L. Cosgrove Memorial Award winner for PRO Hardware. This recognition bestows the highest honor on PRO stores nationwide.

In 2012, Voncel Thacker named Michael G. Taylor as the new General Manager. Working with the Thackers, Taylor has brought a new strategy of larger inventory offerings and merchandise setup to the store. As a member of the Wallace Hardware PRO Advisory Board, Taylor is working hard to implement up-to-date techniques and technology to help shoppers find the right merchandise, quickly. He has dedicated himself to making Hindman PROMart the premier hardware and lumber supplier in Hindman, Kentucky.

In May of 2015, the beloved owner, Robert C. Thacker passed away. His dreams and passion for his tiny lumber store are still alive in his son and the employees of Hindman PROMart.
